The workshop team at Art Stone Memorials has recently completed a restoration project for a family who were keen to preserve a marble book memorial dedicated to their loved one that was first installed in the Seventies. The family were keen to preserve the history and memories invested in the original installation but also wanted to give it a modern feel and ensure it was safe and secure for future posterity.
Firstly, the team carefully removed the memorial from the cemetery and brought it back to the workshop. Due to its age, the book (which was held together with a copper pipe) needed to be separated from the base so that work could be carried out to restore it to its former glory and bring it in line with current health and safety standards.
A major part of the restoration was to remove, re-drill and fit new dowels between the book and the base.
The next phase was to clean the marble which had severely weathered over time. To avoid damage to the inscription, the book face was carefully cleaned with a special chemical substance.
Meanwhile the base and rest were cleaned with a diamond polisher.
The book was then refitted in line with health and safety regulations and restored to its original place in the cemetery.
